Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20 1964) is an American politician and attorney who is the 49th and current vice-president of the United States. She is the first woman to hold the vice-president and the highest ranking female politician in U.S history. She is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition, she served as an United States senator representing California between 2017-2021. Born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, before being recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and then to the City Attorney of San Francisco's office. In 2003 she was elected the district attorney of San Francisco. In 2010 Harris was elected Attorney General of California and then re-elected in 2014. Harris was the United States junior senator from California, from 2017 to 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Santiago in the 2016 Senate election making her the 2nd African American woman to serve in Congress , and the only South Asian American American to do so in the United States Senate. She was a senator and advocated for healthcare reform as well as federal cannabis de-scheduling an opportunity to become a citizen for immigrants who are not legally documented and the DREAM Act, a ban against assault weapons, and progressive tax reform. She gained a national profile for her provocative questions of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings, including Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and was accused of assault on a woman.
